Departmental Outcomes for Math 334, Spring 2017

The Math Department has established eight outcomes for graduating mathematics majors. The table below indicates which outcomes will beaddressed in Math 334.

1. Demonstrates proficiency in Algebra and Trigonometry necessary for success in Advanced mathematical studies. Minimal Students need this proficiency to understand problems and proofs. Knowledge, Analysis
2. Demonstrates proficiency in Differential, Integral, and Multivariable Calculus necessary for success in Advanced mathematical studies. Medium Calculus is essential to success in this class. Knowledge, Analysis
3. Demonstrates content knowledge of both abstract and applied mathematical disciplines by stating definitions, salient theorems, and proofs of major theorems and concepts that are core content in upper division courses. Medium Content knowledge will be expanded; definitions and theorems are key to understanding calculus and how they help us develop a living knowledge of mathematics. Knowledge, Inquiry, Analysis
4. Organize and explain their knowledge of logic and mathematical content in the structure of original valid proofs. Medium Demonstration of steps in a logical and coherent manner is expected. Communication, Analysis
5. Communicate mathematical ideas effectively in both written and oral context. High Students must be able to write solutions in a logical and cohesive manner; likewise, oral explanations are very important for the successful student. Communication
6. Apply major definitions, theorems and algorithms in problem solving. Very High Students must know and apply theorems. Knowledge, Analysis
7. Use appropriate technological tools while solving mathematical problems. High Students should have a good knowledge of calculator use, as well as desktop software for writing mathmatics. Knowledge, Analysis
8. Prepare professionally for graduate school or employment in mathematics or related fields. Minimal While the course minimally prepares students for employment or graduate school, it enables students to begin their journey in their decision for graduate school, employment, or other decisions.
